This weeks topic: RACE

The very first thing that comes to my mind when I see the word "race" is how, since my son was old enough to walk, we've been "racing". Racing to the bathtub, racing to brush our teeth, racing to the car. You get the idea. In his nearly nine years of life, I'm fairly sure it is the most brilliant parenting strategy I've come up with. Whenever he would argue with me about not wanting to do something I would challenge him to a race to that very thing and he was instantly taken over by his competitive nature and before he knew what happened he was in the bathtub. ;)

We haven't raced in awhile. Maybe it's because our new house has an upstairs and I'm clutzy, or possibly it's because he is actually fast now and I don't have much of a chance anymore. But the other night he was complaining about the shower and things were about to escalate and I remembered the race. It worked. We raced to the top of the stairs. He won. And he took a shower.

  1. What a lovely story about race! I enjoyed your view so much. I can almost hear "ready, set, go!" being declared through your hallways. :) My nephews do that too.

    Great post!

  2. Hi there. Wanted to pop over and read what you wrote also! Cute story. Sounds like a good way to get a child to do something to me! Aside from the blonde moment factor that you mentioned is something you would totally do too , we do have a couple other things in common. I also love reading and have always wanted to be a writer (since like elementary school). I had put all those dreams aside to be an "adult" haha and just started writing on my new blog August because I figured it would be a start at going after some of those dreams :) Sorry to read about your loss of your loved one to pancreatic cancer. That is just awful. I too have lost a loved one to this-my uncle about 5 years ago. It was very unexpected and he was gone 6 months after diagnosis. He was young and healthy. We were pretty close but I can't imagine losing the love of your life to that. Take care and be blessed !

    1. Thanks for reading. I am sorry about your loss of your uncle. Pancreatic cancer is the worst. My husband was young and healthy too.

I love that we have so many things in common. I laughed at your "adult" comment. I am 38 and STILL have a hard time believing I'm a "grown up!" :)

  3. Hi Vicki! Thanks for coming by to visit & comment on my blog yesterday! When I read your post, I had to chuckle as I can definitely relate and have totally used that with my 4-year-old son. Whether it's to get him to supper, to the bath, or to the potty, he LOVES to run and race and be chased, so it's great. Thanks for sharing!
